WORKSHOPS IN DEVISED THEATRE AND CIRCUS

“… an enticing glimpse of the potential of what can be achieved when circus and theatre arts are imaginatively” combined.” (Total Theatre)

Company FZ is an award winning, internationally touring visual theatre company based in East London. Our work is devoted to a synthesis of Design, Theatre, Physicality and Circus Arts; the audience is taken on a journey that is full ofemotional content and physical spectacle, moving from hilarity to tragedy, floor to air and tranquillity to turbulence. The starting point for all the work is social observation and reflection on human behaviour.

Our workshops deliver the skills and physical language we use when creating our productions. Theatre / Science students at Stockholm University are currently studying our specific physical vocabulary through analysis of our show Throat.

Workshops and Masterclasses can be tailored to a particular programme of work, or produced in collaboration with Tutors / Heads of Department to suit your needs. Participants range from GCSE to MA students.

Depending on the needs of the workshop or master-class, participants will be led through a series of exercises resulting in a deeper understanding of how physical skills and circus ‘tricks’ can be translated into theatre performance.

Participants will have the chance to improve upon their existing physical capabilities through exercises such as...

Theatre Games collated from over 20 years of devised theatre experience, taken from known stock in alternative theatre and also created by the company directors.

Using physical and circus skills to improvise and create their own performance vocabulary, drawing on personal material, stories and experiences.

Using aerial apparatus to explore the use of space in making theatre, taking narrative into an alternative physical area. Giving confidence to the performer/director to use this apparatus.

Skills are taught through a fusion of the following:

devising skills aerial skills (rope, trapeze, sling)
contact improvisation
dance
theatre games
object manipulation
theatre
clown (Gaulier, Lecoq)
gestural choreography/mime
acrobatic balancing
ensemble work

Whilst physically demanding, the workshops do not push participants beyond their physical limitations. Basic skills are taught alongside the more challenging.

The workshop resulted in the creation of individual performance pieces utilising the aerial rope.

Workshops for Students -Aerial, Dance and Physical Theatre

(Croydon College, AS & A2 Theatre Studies) Physical Theatre or Dance Skills Required

Designed for students of physical theatre or dancers who wish to explore how Circus techniques can be applied to their training and how those may be invigorated with a basic knowledge of aerial and acrobatic skill. Using theatre games and improvisation techniques, this is for students who want to explore the difficulties that being in the air presents. To be in the air for a reason is the way theatre meets dance/ circus.
